We came back from our camping trip on August 1st in the afternoon. It was a fun filled 10 days. Well we had a couple of scares but hey we wanted adventure. The trip was changed a bit from our original plans. We went the first night to Rainbow Beach as planned but I don't know about ever staying there again. The campsite was way too open for ourtent. It's better to go there if you actually have a camper. It was really hot there and we went through a lot of bug spray. The beach wasn't too bad. We took one short trail but didn't really look for others. Too hot.
The next morning we drove to Dauphin. Not that far from Rainbow beach and went to Walmart to get some supplies. After that we didn't really look through Dauphin instead we made our way to Rickers campground which is right on Lake of the Prairies. We checked the campground out - I took a few photos but we didn't stay there. Everything was open, there was no beach and you had to pay for the showers $2. Plus it was fairly pricey to stay there. We had then left the campsite and went to Asessippi provincial park. Very nice therewe ended up staying from Monday to Friday morning. That was our home base. Great views, nice campsite, not abad beach (except for the stairs leading to it) and it was a little chilly in spots. You could tell you were in the lake. We did take side trips to: Waywayseecappo, Angusville, Russell, Shellmouth, Shellmouth Dam, Roblin and Inglis. As well as taking several trails within the park. That kept us busy. If you ever stay thereyou really need a flashlight for the nighttime. It gets pitch dark and trying to find your way to the bathroomis an adventure. I got lost. That was a little scary.
Friday morning we left and went to Yorkton, Saskatchewan but we couldn't find a room to stay there, apparentlythere were 2 weddings and something else going on, so the places were booked up. We called Melville Saskatchewan which is only 30 min away and found a room there. I have to say we were very happy that we went there. Very nice little city. It is noted as Saskatchewan's smallest city with around 4400 people. The place looks a little bigger then that but we were told that a lot of the houses have 1 person in them. It is a very nice place to visit and I guessit would be a nice place to live as well. Very quiet and peaceful. We didn't hear any sirens or anythinglike that for the 2 nights that we stayed there. Such a change from living in Winnipeg where you hear a lot of them.I will be posting 3 different pages for Melville, 1 showing the city and some of the things you will see there, 1 for the Melville Millionaires game that we went to (that's their baseball team) and 1 for the 2 museums that we visited. Melville is largely a railroad town as CN is their biggest employer and yes they are hiring and they are lookingto expand their city. They could use a shoe store, men's store and a few other ones. They have a lot of restaurants already. We went to this ice cream store that has 24 flavors of soft ice cream! yes it was very good.Friday night was when we went to the baseball game. We decided to spend another night in Melville and went to Yorkton on Saturdayto look around. My main point that I wanted to see in Yorkton was the St Mary's Ukrainian Catholic church which is located on 155 Catherine street in Yorkton. When you go to the yorkton page and see the church you will understand why.It was breathtaking!. I took a lot of photos and even bought some post cards while there. Plus I put a donation in the box.
Sunday morning we left and drove the long drive to Manipogo Provincial park. On the way we stopped off in a few places.Churchbridge, sk. A cute little town has the worlds largest loonie as well as some murals in the town. Then we stopped off in a few manitoba towns: Grandview, Gilbert Plains, made a quick stop in Dauphin but nothing was open yet, Winnipegosis, and then Manipogo. Boy was that a long drive. We set up camp and we stayed there from Sunday night till Wednesday morning. I ran into a few cousins that was cool. I love the campsites there, the beach is beautiful, the concession stand is great ..but the bathrooms need a little work. As do the showers, that water was way too hot. Monday we went to Ste Rose Du Lac and wandered around there for a little bitand we saw a bison farm on the way back. Of course I took lots of photos a few will be on my animals page in a few minutes.Monday was also the day we tried perogy poutine at the concession stand. Very good! perogies, gravy and cheese. Ok not good for your cholesterol but tasty!. Tuesday was the scary day. There were a couple of thunderstorms. One in the afternoon while wewere in the water. I saw lightening and heard thunder and said..ok thats it. But tuesday night was the big one. Very scary in a tent. There was sheet lightening, heavy thunder, heavy rain, very windy (almost blew a tree through the tent) and hail. What fun that was.Luckily it was a short storm.
Wednesday morning I went for a walk and saw a few trees down after that one. We left wednesday and slowly made our way back home.Stopping off in a couple of places - the narrows - was very pretty and then Ashern and Woodlands on the way home.
So there you have it.
